Wine Pioneer Hubert Opici Celebrates 100th Birthday

Chairman of Opici Wine Group Will Become a Centenarian on March 13 — His 100th Year Will Be Commemorated With Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon Called “H”

GLEN ROCK, NJ, March 9, 2016 – Pop the bubbly and raise a glass! Wine industry legend Hubert Opici will celebrate his one hundredth birthday on March 13. The Chairman of Opici Wine Group – who was recently honored as an “American Wine Legend” by “Wine Enthusiast” – attributes his longevity to his family and deep passion for wine.

“I feel truly blessed to be celebrating 100 years surrounded by my daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren,” said Hubert. “Their love keeps my heart young. And working alongside them to build this business has been an immeasurable pleasure.”

Born in 1916 to Joseph and Esther Opici in New Jersey, Hubert joined his parents in the wine business in 1934. In 1942, Hubert put his wine career on hold when he volunteered for the Armed Forces. But he eagerly rejoined the business a few years later, taking the reins of the New Jersey operations as his parents moved to California to work on the family’s newly acquired winery.

Under Hubert’s dynamic leadership, the company has experienced tremendous growth and success over the decades. What started as a small New Jersey distributor has evolved into the Opici Wine Group, an importer and distributor of an international portfolio of fine wines & spirits, employing more than 500 people across the United States. The business includes Opici Wines – a national importer and producer representing nearly 50 brands of wines, spirits, and craft beer – and Opici Family Distributing, which boasts distributors in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Florida, Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.

“What my grandfather has accomplished in 100 years is truly remarkable,” said Don Opici, Managing Director of Opici Wines. “He inspires me every day in his devotion to our family and his commitment to this business.”

To honor this remarkable 100th birthday milestone, the Opici family created a limited edition Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon called “H.” The grapes are sourced from select parcels of old vines in the heart of Napa’s Oakville district. Layers of plum, dark cherry and currant flavors – as well as subtle touches of black licorice and pepper – remain pure and graceful through the long, lingering finish. H is available in select markets around the county at a retail price of $32.99.
