Kinien Cabernet Sauvignon

Ruca Malen

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Uco Valley, Argentina

Kinien Cabernet Sauvignon

From the Mapuche language meaning “unique,” Kinien is the icon line of wines from Ruca Malen produced from 100% Estate-grown fruit in limited quantities. A big, bold wine with concentrated dark fruit flavors and intense aromas of cassis. Smoky, toasted nuances enhance the bouquet; the acidity is balanced by small, rounded tannins that give the wine a supple texture and a persistent, lingering finish. Kinien Cabernet is aged in new French oak barrels for 16 months. It will reward extensive cellaring in bottle.

Focused red berries, red plums and blueberries, along with clove, cinnamon and old leather. The palate is a little less promising than the nose, as the fruit dries out, while the tannin persists. Has some nice length, though. Drink now.

The nose has intense herbal aromas, the classic bell pepper and green tobacco leaf notes. There is something creamy too, a little lactic and smoky… The full-bodied palate has abundant, ripe and dusty tannins that fill your mouth and is a little too oaky for my liking. Powerful and ripe, this is a well-oaked Cabernet.

Saturated bright, deep ruby.  Crushed dark berries, licorice pastille and violet on the aromatic nose.  Densely packed, with flavors of violet, herbs and spices.  Powerful and chewy on the long, lively, firmly tannic finish. Firm acidity.

With time in the glass it rounds into spicy, herbal form. A tight, reedy palate is bolstered by tomatoey acidity, while flavors of herbal raspberry and red currant finish with ripped tannins and plenty of residual acidity. Drink through 2024.

The 2008 Kinien Cabernet Sauvignon is from three hectares from Vistaflores in the Uco Valley courtesy of vines planted in 1999. It was cropped at 5 tons per hectare and aged in new French oak for sixteen months. The bouquet is very Bordeaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy black fruit, black olive and tobacco. It has a firm grip. Drink now-2017.

Bodega Ruca Malen’s two high-end offerings are outstanding. The 2007 Kinien Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 16 months in new French oak. It is a deep purple color with a nicely perfumed nose of wood smoke, mineral, a hint of balsamic, violets, black currant and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, it has ample savory fruit, a smooth texture, good depth, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it through 2027.
