Kinien Malbec

Ruca Malen

100% Malbec

Uco Valley, Argentina

Kinien Malbec

From the Mapuche language meaning “unique,” Kinien is the icon line of wines from Ruca Malen produced from 100% Estate-grown fruit in limited quantities. Kinien Malbec is layered with aromas of ripe cherries and plums, violets, and smoke. Fresh and juicy on the palate, the sweet, concentrated tannins are balanced by a pleasant acidity. The long finish is marked by a velvety texture with hints of chocolate and a trace of cedar. A wine which will reward extensive cellaring, it is aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months and in bottle for 8.

Aromas of desiccated black fruits start with blackberry and air out in the direction of raisin. A huge palate is massively tannic, while this tastes of dried plum, cassis and tobacco. Severe tannins make for a rubbing finish.

The aromas of licorice, tar and dark fruit are very impressive. Full body, silky and refined tannins and a pretty finish. Shows tension and form. Drink in 2019 but beautiful now. Best wine from here!

This bulky bullish Malbec… tastes earthy, oaky and like blackberry, while the finish echoes with those same flavors. Drink thought 2023.

This is a malbec that shows intensity and richness but remains balanced and delicious. Lots of dark fruits with hints of minerals and flowers. Drink now.

In 2011 there are plenty of black fruit aromas, with some notes of peat and graphite, somehow also black, but with some violet and even red berry notes fighting to surface with plenty of spices and some notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is medium to full-bodied with ripe, round tannins, a soft, velvety texture and a nice thread of acidity with spice flavors from the oak…Give it a little more time to integrate the creamy oak and it should come into its own nicely.

Smoky, black-fruit aromas are spicy and peppery. In the mouth, this is buzzing with shearing acidity, which creates a lively… mouthfeel. Roasted, oaky, spicy plum flavors finish with briny, salty notes, rubbery tannins and a suggestion of animal hide.

A reticent, backward nose of blackberries and damsons intermixed with aromas of cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and cloves. The medium to full-boded palate displays an array of flavors of ripe fruits and flowers with a dry finish. Give it a little more time and it should come into better balance. Drink 2015-2020.

A minerally bouquet includes hard-driving berry and cassis aromas. A mouthfilling set of tannins and powerful fruit is focused on berry, toast, pepper, and a stewed note. Finishing flavors of cocoa and espresso fold in a leathery note along with a lasting beam of bright acidity.

Bright, saturated medium ruby.  Crushed blackberry aroma lifted by exotic oak spices; shows an almost porty ripeness on the nose.  Then dense, lush and sweet but with harmonious acidity and a violet element lifting the black fruit and chocolaty oak flavors.  Finishes firmly tannic and bright.  Built to age.

Saturated ruby to the rim.  Aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and espresso.  Dense, sweet and concentrated, with sexy mocha oak tones complementing dark berry fruit.  This large-scaled, primary, palate-coating malbec possesses surprisingly good supporting acidity.  Finishes round, broad and quite tannic, with a lingering flavor of melting chocolate.

The 2009 Kinien Malbec from Vista Flores is cropped at 3,000kg per acre and aged in new French and American oak. It has a voluptuous, exotic nose of kirsch, strawberry jam and marmalade that is well-defined. The palate is full-bodied and hedonistic, but the ambitious dark cherry and cassis fruit is kept in check by the crisp acidity and the finish is focused and nicely poised. This comes recommended for oenophiles with a penchant for a slice of hedonism. Drink now-2018.

This big, lush, friendly and serious Malbec is packed with prune, blackberry and toast aromas. On the palate, it’s deep and layered, the perfect bed for flavors of blackberry, chocolate and herb to fill. Huge for sure, but still complex, with dynamite prune and licorice notes on the finish. Drink now-2015.

Saturated, glass-staining ruby. Crushed blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, roasted herbs and nutty oak on the nose. Suave on entry, then super concentrated in the middle. Stuffed with fruit. Finishes big and broad, with building, tongue-dusting tannins.

The 2008 Kinien (meaning “the unique”) Malbec was aged in new French oak for 14 months. Notions of pain grille, mineral, spice box, incense, lavender, and black cherry lead to a structured, slightly lean Malbec with savory flavors and moderate length. Another 2-3 years of cellaring may see it fill out and achieve an outstanding rating.

Bright medium ruby. Blackberry pastille, violet, tobacco, herbs and pepper on the nose, complemented by sexy roasted oak. Lush and sweet on entry, then dense, silky and fine-grained in the middle, with sneaky intensity to the black fruit flavors. Ripe balancing acids and smooth tannins give this persistent, suave wine a solid structure for further development in bottle.

Grown in Vista Flores, where the Uco Valley rises to 3,300 feet, this malbec is marked by ripeness and warmth, the mature fruit balanced by a firm tannic structure that takes charge of lifting the flavors. Serve this with meat empanadas.

The 2007 Kinien Malbec was aged for 14 months in new French oak. It is a glass-coating opaque purple with a nicely perfumed nose of wood smoke, mineral, violets, incense, black cherry, and plum. Medium-bodied, elegant, and layered, it has a smooth palate-feel, savory flavors, and good length. It has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will be at its best from 2011 to 2019.

Sweet, forward aromas of mocha, blackberry, cotton candy and vanilla signal a rich wine. The palate is round and chunky, with a spot of elegance but more size and force, Flavors of chunky blackberry are slightly salty and salinic at the edges, while overall it’s thick, fruity and black in nature. Drink now through 2012.
