Molin Vecchio

Named for the old flour mill nestled in the valley below the vineyard located in Montepulciano, Molin Vecchio is an estate-owned single vineyard Super Tuscan. Intense aromas of blackberry and licorice are accented by black pepper and vanilla. Luscious red fruit flavors and spice are complemented by supple, well-integrated tannins on the long, persistent finish of this full-bodied wine. Extensively aged in new French and American oak barrels for 12 months, followed by 4 years in bottle, this wine will reward additional cellaring.

This red exudes black currant, mint and wild herb flavors, matched to a framework of dense, beefy tannins. The bouquet is particularly alluring, but it’s unclear whether this has the ripe fruit to outlast its tannic clout. I wouldn’t wait too much longer. Sangiovese. Drink now through 2028. 420 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Made with 80% Sangiovese, 10% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this opens with aromas evoking dark berry, underbrush and cedar. The savory, concentrated palate offers blackberry jam, mocha, licorice and a tobacco note set against fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2026.

This is hitting its stride. The cherry and plum fruit has mellowed, along with the tannins, and there are supporting elements of mineral, wild herb, leather and tobacco. Still has some tannins to resolve, but food will help. Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Full of ripe, black cherry and leather notes, this red offers power and density. Still has grip on the finish, but stays fresh and juicy, with a lingering aftertaste of spice and mineral. Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2024.

2006

Wine Advocate - 91 pts

An evolved blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine opens to a brooding dark color and thick, dark concentration. The fresh conditions of the 2006 vintage have done much to preserve the integrity of the fruit. Dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, spice and Spanish cedar emerge from the glass. The wine’s density is rich, plush and enduring.

2004

Wine Spectator - 95 pts

A minty style, boasting loads of sweet black currant, black cherry, violet and tobacco aromas and flavors. Harmonious and elegant, with a fresh structure focusing the flavors. Though almost mature, this still needs to shed some tannic weight. Offers a finish of licorice, spice and mineral. Drink now through 2020.

Wine Enthusiast - 94 pts

This is a gorgeous blend of Sangiovese (80%), Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon with luscious levels of black fruit, hickory smoke and cherry cola. What sets the wine apart is the density and the obvious quality of the fruit. It is chewy and slightly sweet with firm, polished tannins on the close.

M. Larner, November 2009

Wine Spectator - 92 pts

This is a very approachable now, with plum and black cherry flavors at the forefront, shaded by tobacco and chocolate notes. Firmly structured and still tannic on the finish, but don’t wait too long. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2018.
